AWU Delegate Training
With perpetual change occurring, both
at the enterprise and National levels, the time has never been more challenging
for Unions t enhance membership, encourage members to take up the role
of Delegate and for the Union to devolve information through ongoing structured
training programs.
The Newcastle Branch of the Australian
Workers Union (AWU) knows only too well the importance of having workplace
representatives (delegates). Just as important is ongoing training for
the Delegate. The Newcastle Branch has been providing training to its delegates
since 1984. This training supplements and complements the on the job "learning"
(experiences).
The AWU acknowledges that all employees
elected as workplace representatives have varying degrees of knowledge
towards the role and responsibilities required. As such the training programs
are constructed in a manner best described like the steps of a ladder.
Each step giving new, interesting and vital information helping the delegate
maintains an advantage in a sometimes demanding position.
Three days training per delegate, per
year may not seem a lot, but put into context ensures the delegate stays
at the forefront of change.
The following is a list of topics covered
in training programs delivered to delegates:
- Conciliation and Arbitration
- Communication
- Conflict resolution
- Industrial Relations
- Know your Union - The AWU
- History of the Trade Union Movement
- Meeting procedures
- Chairing a meeting
- Negotiating techniques
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Interpretation of your Award
- Enterprise negotiation
- Recruitment
- Report writing
- Roles and responsibilities of the
Delegate
- Roles and responsibilities of the
Rank & File
- Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation
In tandem with Delegate training the
AWU can supply enterprise specific training the AWU can supply enterprise
specific training (industry training) when requested, covering all union
members at a particular workplace. Regular publishing of local, state and
national magazines and newspapers are another format in getting information
to all our members.
While ever unions remain on the Australian
industrial landscape, the workplace membership requires the "leadership"
of the workplace delegate. As stated in the opening sentence, perpetual
change in our workplace environment requires ongoing training. The AWU
in tends to be around for a long, long time and to help ensure this happens,
we'll maintain its comprehensive training programs for delegates and members,
ensuring this proactive Union stays ahead of the rest.
